Most design decays because it is fitted to one moment. We build in the capacity to change: graded permanence, passive systems that do not depend on maintenance budgets, and structures that can be reconfigured or removed without writing off the investment.
Regulation, climate and markets move faster than a building programme. The work is read against that movement, so what is delivered is ahead of the requirement rather than compliant with the one that is about to be replaced.
A systemic read finds the point where one intervention moves several things at once. That is the difference between solving the commission and shifting the conditions the commission sits in, and it is why the same method pays off in a factory, a district and a product line.
Ecology, physics, economics, governance and social reality are weighed together, by people who work across all of them. A scheme that resolves four and fractures the fifth is not finished.
