Utrecht Community (UCo)

Utrecht, Netherlands 2016 Architecture

Delivered a pioneering circular building design housing 180+ sustainable entrepreneurs in a historic depot.

The Utrecht Community (UCo) is the national center for sustainable entrepreneurship in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Located in a monumental and historic train depot, UCo fosters a community of over 180 pioneering sustainable entrepreneurs in 1,800m² of working, meeting, and demonstration space.

Except developed UCo on its own initiative as a continuation of the success of the Rotterdam Collective. More than a building, UCo is a living community. Its interior design exemplifies the latest in circular and sustainable building practice, creating a healthy and inspirational workplace that strengthens cooperation and accelerates genuine sustainable change across society.

The Problem

Sustainable entrepreneurs in the Netherlands lacked a dedicated physical hub that matched their values. Existing coworking spaces treated sustainability as an afterthought. The challenge was to transform a historic train depot into a workspace that didn't just house sustainable businesses, but embodied sustainability in every material choice, spatial decision, and community program.

The interior had to be as circular as possible while remaining socially focused, facilitating ease of communication and collaboration. Every design choice needed to demonstrate that sustainable building practice can be beautiful, functional, and economically viable.

Process

Community-first design

Rather than starting with architecture, the design process began with the community's needs. We mapped how sustainable entrepreneurs work, collaborate, and share knowledge, then translated these patterns into spatial configurations that naturally encourage exchange.

Circular material strategy

Every material was selected for circularity. The fit-out uses reclaimed, recyclable, and bio-based materials throughout. The depot's existing structure was preserved and celebrated, minimizing demolition waste while honoring the building's industrial heritage.

Integrated sustainability systems

Beyond materials, the design integrates healthy indoor climate systems, energy-efficient lighting, water conservation, and biophilic design elements. The building serves as a living demonstration of what sustainable interior design can achieve.
