Circular: Spiritual Center

Conceived a regenerative spiritual center that heals its ravine ecosystem while serving the community.

On a steep slope of Toronto's ravine bioregion, a precious ecosystem threatened by erosion. Here, we envisioned a place that both inspires visitors and regenerates the land. For the community, it's a place of contemplation, reflection, and gathering. For the ravine, it's an anchor that stabilizes the soil and restores native ecology.

This concept design from 2008 for a regenerative community center uses only bio-based materials, is energy neutral, water neutral, and fully circular for its construction materials. The center's ecologically regenerative design makes it a pioneering project that blends human experience with ecology.

The Problem

Toronto's ravine bioregion faces ongoing erosion that threatens both the urban landscape and the ecosystem it supports. Building on such a sensitive slope typically accelerates degradation. The challenge was to design a public building that doesn't merely minimize harm, but actively heals the land it sits on.

The design needed to serve as a sacred space for all, reflecting universal values and symbolism of life, time, and humanity, while every construction decision had to contribute to ecological restoration rather than extraction.

Process

Ecologically regenerative concept

The design embeds itself in the ravine's natural systems and changes with the seasons. Rather than fighting the slope, the building's concentric walls echo outward into the landscape, creating protected niches, small gardens, and intimate gathering spaces that stabilize the soil and establish new ecological zones.

Water as design element

Rainwater is captured in a basin at the hilltop and flows through small channels that intersect walkways, then into the core building and out again to infiltrate the ecosystem. Water becomes both a spiritual metaphor and a functional restoration tool for the ravine.

Bio-based material palette

Every material was selected for full circularity: bio-based, locally sourced where possible, and designed for eventual return to biological cycles. The structure demonstrates that buildings can be materially regenerative, not just neutral.
